Former NHL player Adam Johnson severely injured after cut to neck during game in Britain’s top league.
Former NHL forward Adam Johnson was severely injured in an on-ice collision when his neck appeared to be cut by a skate during a game in Britain’s top hockey league, his team said on Saturday night.
A brief video clip of the broadcast of the Nottingham Panthers-Sheffield Steelers game reviewed by The Athletic appears to show Johnson skating with the puck up the left side of the rink before the injury occurs as he collides with an opposing player and both fall to the ice.
Johnson quickly gets up with large amounts of blood on his jersey and the ice. He attempts to skate back to the bench as a teammate puts his left hand to Johnson’s neck, before the camera cuts away.
Johnson, 29, plays for the Panthers of the Elite Ice Hockey League, which has 10 franchises including teams in Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England.
Saturday’s Challenge Cup match against the Sheffield Steelers was halted in the 34th minute “for a bad injury,” according to the Panthers’ official account on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Minutes later, the team posted that fans had been asked to leave the building “due to a major medical emergency.
Johnson, who signed with Nottingham this past summer, played for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL, scoring a goal and four points in 13 games over parts of the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons.
